Zyban (bupropion) is an anti-depressant medication, which can provide significant help to those who want to quit smoking. The medication can reduce smoking cravings and other accompanying effects. Its other brands such as Forfivo XL and Wellbutrin are used for major depressive disorder or seasonal affective disorder.
How to take
Swallow the tablet of Zyban without chewing or crashing, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
Zyban should be taken according to your doctor’s instructions and directions on the prescription label. Do not change the dosage or period of use without prior medical consult. The medication may cause temporary insomnia, so avoid taking it before bedtime. Usually, the medication is taken daily for 7 to 12 weeks. Taking an excess dose of Zyban increases the risk of seizures.
It is recommended to continue smoking for the first week of taking the medication to achieve its high concentration in the blood. Avoid smoking if you are using other nicotine products.
If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Contact a medical specialist immediately if you experience any of the following: mood swings, behavioral changes, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, agitation, hostility feelings, aggressiveness, restlessness, hyperactivity, depression, suicidal thoughts, seizures, increased heartbeat, fever, swollen glands, skin pain, red or purple skin rash in the upper body, itching, pain in the joints, blistering, peeling, burning sensation in the eyes, or sore throat.
Common side effects of using Zyban include mouth dryness, nausea, pain in the stomach, headaches, dizziness, reduced libido, muscle pain, sore throat, skin itching or rash, frequent urination, appetite changes, weight loss or gain.
Note that this list does not include all possible side effects. Other side effects might occur depending on individual health conditions.
Do not combine Zyban with alcohol as it may increase the risk of seizures. If you are a frequent alcohol consumer, speak to your doctor about it. The medication may lead to mental slowdown – use caution when driving or engaging in any other activity that requires alertness.
Notify your medical specialist about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medications, dietary supplements and herbal products, especially blood clots medications, such as clopidogrel, ticlopidine, tirofiban; heart or blood pressure medications such as atenolol, flecainide, metoprolol, propafenone, propranolol, etc.; HIV or AIDS medications such as efavirenz or ritonavir; or seizure medications such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin.
Other medications may interact with Zyban as well.
If you have missed a dose of Zyban, take it as soon as you remember. However, if there is less than 8 hours left until your next dose, skip the dose you have missed.
Zyban should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture, out of reach of children and pets.
