Terbinafine is prescribed for treatment of selected fungal infections developing on fingers and toenails. The medication can not only kill sensitive fungi, but also prevent their future growth.
How to take
Terbinafine should be taken during meals or otherwise. Do not stop taking the medication even if the symptoms have decreased, as it may take up to several months to cure the infection completely.
Common side effect of taking Terbinafine include: diarrhea, feeling full, headaches, stomach gas, digestion problems, stomach pain, and mild nausea. Contact your doctor if any of them persist or become bothersome.
Contact your doctor immediately if any of the following occurs: nausea, vomiting, increased tiredness, lack of appetite, jaundice, itching, dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools or abdominal pain. These symptoms may signify a beginning of liver damage.
If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue or glands, tightness in the chest, etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Speak to your doctor prior to taking Terbinafine if you have a liver or kidney disease, immune system or blood problems, as well as previous allergic reaction to the medication.
DO NOT stop taking the medication even if the symptoms have decreased, as it may take up to several months to cure the infection completely.
As both alcohol and Terbinafine may affect the liver, avoid or limit consumption of alcohol while taking the medication.
Notify your doctor of all medications you are using, especially: cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB); rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane); cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral); antiarrhythmics (flecainide, propafenone), beta-blockers (metoprolol), anticoagulants (warfarin), monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors (selegiline), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fluoxetine), or tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline).
Speak to your doctor before combining Terbinafine with any other medications, including prescription and over-the-counterdrugs.
If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you have missed.
Terbinafine should be stored at temperatures under 77°F (25°C) away from moisture, heat and light. Do not store the medication in the bathroom. Keep Terbinafine in a tightly closed container, out of reach of children and pets.
