Generic Remeron is a tetra-cyclic antidepressant that is usually prescribed to patients suffering from major depression and anxiety. It is one of the noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants (NaSSAs). Generic Remeron targets imbalanced brain chemicals that cause depression, and is believed to increase norepinephrine and serotonin activity, which help elevate mood.
How to take
Always follow your doctor’s instructions and the directions on your prescription label when taking Generic Remeron. Do not take more or less than directed. Regular Generic Remeron Tablets: Take the tablet with a glass of water.
Disintegrating Tablets: Keep the tablet in its original packaging until it is time for you to take it. Using dry hands, put the tablet in your mouth. It will begin to dissolve immediately. DO NOT SWALLOW IT WHOLE. Allow it to dissolve first without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. No water is required.
Generic Remeron is usually taken once a day before bed time. To be sure, follow your doctor’s instructions. In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. Skip the missed tablet if the schedule of your next tablet is almost up.
Keep in mind that it may take a few weeks before you experience improvement in your depression. Keep using the medication as directed. If you do not see any improvement in your symptoms after 4 weeks, tell your doctor.
Ask your doctor how to prevent withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking Generic Remeron.
Seek immediate emergency help if you experience any of the following allergic reactions: skin rash/hives, breathing difficulty, swelling of tongue, throat, lips or face.
If any of the following symptoms worsens, inform your doctor: Mood/behavior changes, insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks, feeling of agitation, irritability, impulsiveness, aggression, restlessness, hostility, hyperactivity (either mentally or physically), becoming more depressed or having suicidal thoughts.
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:
- Hallucinations, agitation, fever, overly active reflexes, irregular heart rate
- Nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea
- Muscle stiffness or tremors
- Excessive sweating, confusion, high fever, fainting or feeling like you are about to faint
- Sores or white patches inside the mouth cavity or lips
- Weakness, difficulty in concentrating, headaches
Less serious side effects of Generic Remeron include drowsiness, increased appetite, lightheadedness, weight gain. Other side effects not mentioned here could occur. If you are not sure if what you’re experiencing is normal, speak to your doctor.
Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Generic Remeron. Generic Remeron may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
You should not take Generic Remeron if you are allergic to mirtazapine or if you are also taking tryptophan (L-tryptophan). DO NOT take Generic Remeron if you are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor such as furazolidone (Furoxone), isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days.
Fatal side effects could occur if you take Generic Remeron before letting an MAO inhibitor completely clear out from your body.
As with some antidepressant drugs, you may experience suicidal thoughts when you start taking Generic Remeron. This is more common among patients under 24 years old. Before taking Generic Remeron, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:
- Epilepsy or seizures
- Bipolar disorder
- Liver or kidney disease
- Heart disease and/or angina in the chest
- Low blood pressure or dizziness when standing up quickly
- History of heart attacks or strokes
- History of drug abuse
- History of having suicidal thoughts
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Store Generic Remeron at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
