Fluconazole is an antifungal medication prescribed for treatment of mouth, throat, esophagus, lungs, bladder, genitals and blood infections caused by fungi.
The medication is also used for prophylaxis of such infections in patients with weaker immune systems after bone marrow transplant, cancer treatments, AIDS and other diseases.
How to take
Take Fluconazole according to your doctor’s instructions and at least 2 hours before using proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole).
The medication should be taken during meals or otherwise, preferably at a predefined time of the day. Do not stop your course of treatment prematurely and do not miss any doses even if the symptoms have subsided.
DO NOT use the medication if you are allergic to it. If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Common effects of using Fluconazole include: dizziness, changes in taste, headache, stomach pain and nausea. If any of them persist or become bothersome, contact your doctor.
Contact a medical specialist immediately if you experience any of the following: diarrhea; large patches of scaly and red skin; swollen abdomen or increase in its tenderness; vomiting; jaundice.
As Fluconazole may cause dizziness, especially if combined with other medications, avoid taking the medication before driving or other activities that require mental alertness. Fluconazole has been shown to cause major liver damage (in some cases terminal); however, mainly in patients with severe medical conditions.
Fluconazole may decrease the efficiency of hormonal birth control pills. It is recommended to use an additional birth control method such as condoms. In case of pregnancy, contact your medical professional to discuss the risks of taking Fluconazole. Also, consult with your doctor if you are breastfeeding as Fluconazole has the ability to pass into breast milk.
As Fluconazole can interact with other medications, notify your doctor of any other drugs you are taking, especially: cisapride, pimozide, serotonin receptor agonists (eletriptan), aldosterone blockers (eplerenone), amiodarone, astemizole, macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin); macrolide immune suppressants (tacrolimus) due to the risk of kidney problems; quinolines (ciprofloxacin) and terfenadine due to the risk of uneven heartbeat; rifabutin due to the risk of certain eye problems (uveitis); rifampin or proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole) due to their potential to decrease Fluconazole 's effectiveness.
Anticoagulants (warfarin), benzodiazepines (alprazolam), buspirone, carbamazepine, cyclophosphamide, cyclosporine, ergot alkaloids (ergotamine ), haloperidol, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors or "statins" (simvastatin), hydantoins (phenytoin), methadone, muscarinic antagonists (solifenacin, tolterodine), narcotics (codeine), ramelteon, sulfonylureas (glipizide), theophylline, tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline).
Other medication may interact with Fluconazole as well.
If you have missed your dose of Fluconazole, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.
Fluconazole should be stored at temperatures below 86°F (30°C) away from moisture, heat and light, out of reach of children and pets.
